Our Heritage

Over a century of service in Indiana

BHI Senior Living's roots extend all the way back to 1904, when Edward and Sarah Crawford donated land in Boone County, Indiana, to the American Baptist churches. As a result, the Crawford Baptist Industrial School opened in 1905 as a non-profit ministry with the mission of operating an orphanage and industrial school.

In 1952, a new era began for the organization with the opening of our first continuing care retirement community (CCRC), Hoosier Village in Indianapolis. Indiana seniors were introduced to a new approach in retirement living.  Today the BHI organization has three CCRCs--Hoosier Village, The Towne House in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, and Four Seasons in Columbus, Indiana.  All three provide high quality, maintenance-free residences; a full continuum of healthcare services, including assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, and rehabilitation services; and a fulfilling lifestyle for active seniors.

Today, BHI sponsors three CCRCs and two HUD-subsidized apartment complexes in Indiana. While our origins in the American Baptist community,, and its ethical principles and sense of integrity form the foundation of our organization, we exist to serve and welcome residents of all faiths, denominations, and backgrounds to our communities, regardless of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, or national origin.
